Creative Highlight 02: Art: Bad Romey

Art is subjective. Art is something that speaks to a whole group pf people by simply just existing. The way how I see it, the world needs artists. Of course we need doctors and lawyers and firefighters and all of that good stuff. But we NEED artists. Let me explain. (because I know that just sounded really bad lol) I feel as if the world can already be so dull and dreary as it is. 2020 am I right? SUPER FUCKING DEPRESSING. We as humans thrive of entertainment. We need entertainment. We damn near crave it. It is viewed as a pastime to keep us pre occupied from all the bullshit that goes on in the world. Long story short, I am convinced without art we would probably be very very VERY depressed. Art brightens up this miserable ass world just a tad, and to further prove my point, I interviewed one of the most talented people I know to ever exist, badromey. If that name doesn't ring a bell, I promise you in a couple of years it will. Romey is a 22 year old artist from Baltimore who makes a living through his artwork and not to mention one of my really good friends. I sat down with him to ask him about what truly pushes him to create such beautiful pieces and how his art in particular has an influence on the culture.

Me: What inspired you to be an artist?

Romey: My need for self expression & the idea of giving the world insight on my inner world/perspective on life and the details within it. Art always felt natural to me, ever since I was 7. It was a thing that found me & stuck with me.

Me: What makes your work different from other artists? Why should we pay attention to you?

Romey: I feel like my artwork comes from a raw, imperfect place that cannot be imitated or overlooked. Whenever I create a piece, it comes from the inner 7 year old that survived society could not suppress.

Me: Aside from art, you seem to be really into fashion can you elaborate on that for me?

Romey: I've always looked at fashion in the same manner as I look at art supplies. Both are tools to create an original way of self expression, and in the world of self expression, there is no right or wrong way to do it. I just like fly shit, so that usually translates into my art/aesthetic and taste for fashion.

Me: Who are your inspirations when it comes to art? Are they any black women who have inspired you?

Romey: I have a lot of inspirations when it comes to art. Some of those artists are Paperfrank, Distortedd, King Spiff, Jagonte, Basquiat, Takashi Murakami and Mcflyy. One black woman in particular who inspires me artistically would be my sister (@creatively.nomadic).

Me: Black women also seem to be the blue print for a couple of your pieces, any particular reason why?

Romey: My love for black women is an undying one. I've always admired the aesthetics of black women and preferred to use them as my muse through art. I plan on incorporating them into larger projects in the near future to express my affinity for the various things black women consist of.

Me: Give some advice to any black women who want to become artists.

Romey: To black people in general: be yourself in life and through your art. The possibilities in the art world are limitless. There is no such thing as bad art, only when you place a label or categorize it. Believe in yourself and express yourself honestly.
